Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Overview
We have compiled answers to questions that our customers are most likely to ask in the order they are asked.
Topic A Cost
Topic B Schedule
Topic C Manufacturing Services
Topic D Automated Test Equipment
Cost
How much is my idea going to cost to design?
Answer: As you might guess, it depends a great deal on your idea. Many things must be considered before an estimate of costs can be made such as the complexity of the design, packaging requirements, environmental requirements, and schedule. A complete estimate can be made by calling a KinTech project engineer. See contacts for more information.

How much will the unit cost once we are in production?
Answer: This depends on the final design. Factors such as quantities of production units desired, board technology (single sided, double sided, multilayer), assembly technology (through hole, surface mount), cost of the parts, and special assembly requirements must be taken into account. Generally, in large quantities, surface mount technology is the least expensive because of production automation, although it may be slightly more expensive in design. For smaller quantities, through hole may be a more appropriate answer due to many though hole parts being available in small batch quantities.
Schedule
How long will it take before my product is ready for production?
Answer: There are a number of very necessary stages to all new development that must be followed. Failure to do so will result in extra money and effort being expended and market opportunity lost. These stages are initial design, initial design review, final design, final design review, breadboard, prototype, design verification test, pre-production, pre-production test, and production. Additional reviews and iterations are sometimes necessary depending on the complexity of the design. Each stage may take anywhere from a few hours to several months depending on the development stage and on the complexity of the design.
Manufacturing Services
What if I only want to have some bare circuit boards built?
Answer: KinTech can help you no matter where you are in the design or manufacturing cycle. We have very competitive circuit board rates. In order to build your board we simply need your Gerber files, the aperature listing, the Excellon drill file, and the tool listing. If you need your design laid out, we can do that using our computer aided design software.

Do you assemble surface mount boards?
Answer: Yes! And through hole as well. We can handle small or large quantities. To provide a quote, all we need is a bill of materials and an assembly drawing.
Automated Test Equipment
What is Automated Test Equipment?
Answer: Automated Test Equipment (ATE) is computer controlled test and measurement equipment that is arranged in such a way as to be able to test a unit with minimal human interaction. The advantage of this kind of test is that each test is repeatable and cost efficient in high volume. The chief disadvatage would be the high cost of programming and setup. However, in large production this cost is easily absorbed.

How do I know if I need ATE?
Answer: Kintech can advise you based on your production needs and budget. Investment in ATE is determined by a combination of product complexity, number of production units, and testing requirements such as required by the FCC or FDA.
